Benefits of sports and recreation for those with disabilities can have significant rehabilitative, independence and physical influence. Improving mobility, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, achieving greater independence and the satisfaction that comes with accomplishing a goal are just a few rewards that people have when participating in Adaptive Sports activities. mission veteran guitar program (NEW)

Veterans from all branches of service can come to learn, engage and develop support systems that help manage service-related challenges.  We provide fundamentals in music theory, rhythm, strumming patterns and scales.

adaptive chair yoga (NEW)

Chair yoga offers a practical alternative to standard yoga with a focus on body posture and balance while in a seated or supported standing position, using the chair for balance.

Golf is a sport that can assist in the development of fine and gross motor skills, concentration, patience and socialization.

Archery is a sport that assists with muscle development, accuracy, balance, coordination and patience.  Program is very closely supervised.

ADAPTIVE BASIC DANCE MOVEMENT

This 50 minute class will teach children basic dance movement where they will learn how the body, arms and legs coordinate, and can be expressive to music. This class is offered in partnership with All Things Are Possible, Inc.

ADAPTIVE AFTER SCHOOL

Thanks to a partnership and funding from United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire, this two day a week after school program is exclusively for youth with cognitive or physical disabilities.

The sensory input and motor enriched environment of this class can help develop self-confidence and focus for children with disabilities, as well as improve coordination, posture, strength and flexibility.

adaptive ballroom dance

This class will teach children with special needs dances such as the waltz, tango, swing and more. At the end of the session, participants will put their new-found skills to use with a performance.

adaptive ukulele & voice 

A vocal instructor and aides will provide voice lessons to children with special needs, including learning to hum, sing along, and play a ukulele.

ADAPTIVE BASKETBALL PROGRAMS

These programs will expose those with special needs to the world of basketball where they can develop motor skills, establish physical activity, and learn the basic rules and fundamentals of basketball.

ADAPTIVE ADULT BOCCE BALL

Adults with all disabilities are welcome to join in the fun during this hour session of bocce ball.  Parent or caretaker welcome if participant requires assistance.

ADAPTIVE ADULT FITNESS CLASS

This boot-camp style class focuses on strength, conditioning, balance and movement.

ADAPTIVE GYMNASTICS

These classes are for children with special needs and include climbing, tumbling, trampoline, and balance beam with a focus on strength and conditioning in a  fun and safe environment.

These sessions include instruction and game play as those with all types of disabilities are taught listening and direction-following skills while learning to play Volleyball!

the ed hastey trail

The Ed Hastey Trail offers an introduction to the natural wonders of the Coachella Valley desert for users of all abilities. This short (1/5 of a mile) paved loop around the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center offers visitors a chance to experience native plants and desert wildflowers, birdwatching and other wildlife viewing, and views of the Coachella Valley and surrounding mountains. The trail is accessible to wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility aids. The Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center is located at 51-500 Cailfornia 74, Palm Desert, CA and can be reached at 760-862-9984.

ADAPTIVE SPORTS COUNCIL

The Adaptive Sports Council is comprised of organizations and individuals interested in providing recreational opportunities to people with disabilities.  This collaborative effort is designed to share resources and information so individuals with disabilities have greater access to these programs.  Families and caregivers of people with disabilities can also learn about the resources available, and have easy access to information about recreational opportunities available throughout the Coachella Valley.

Adaptive/Therapeutic sports & Recreation

Sports and Recreation have value in everyone’s life.  We get satisfaction from a good workout or game, getting the

heart pumping to stay fit and enjoying the camaraderie that comes from activity with others.  That’s why the Desert Recreation District is committed to providing sports and recreation access to those with disabilities.

Through partnerships with organizations focused on providing classes, activities and events for people with various disabilities, the Adaptive/Therapeutic Sports and Recreation Program will make fitness accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or learning challenges.

 

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

The Desert Recreation District is currently recruiting for community professionals to participate in our Accessability Council. Made up of leaders with expertise in various areas of disabilities, rehabilitation, charitable giving and compliance, this group will provide guidance for the program.

 

OUR PARTNERS

Collaboration with organizations expert in various areas of disability allows the Desert Recreation District to provide sports and recreational activities, programs and events in a variety of sports for people with variety challenges.
