Benefits of sports and recreation for those with disabilities can have significant rehabilitative, independence and physical influence. Improving mobility, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, achieving greater independence and the satisfaction that comes with accomplishing a goal are just a few rewards that people have when participating in Adaptive Sports activities. The Ed Hastey Trail offers an introduction to the natural wonders of the Coachella Valley desert for users of all abilities. This short (1/5 of a mile) paved loop around the Santa Rosa & San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center offers visitors a chance to experience native plants and desert wildflowers, birdwatching and other wildlife viewing, and views of the Coachella Valley and surrounding mountains. The trail is accessible to wheelchairs, strollers, and other mobility aids.
These soccer programs are an excellent way to strengthen coordination and gross motor skills. Individuals with all disabilities are welcome to join the fun at either our indoor or outdoor adaptive soccer classes/clinics or teams.
adaptive basic dance movement
In this class, children with special needs will learn basic dance movement and they will be introduced to how the body, arms and legs coordinate and can be expressed to music.
This class will teach children with special needs dances such as the waltz, tango, swing and more. At the end of the session, participants will put their new-found skills to use with a performance.
A vocal instructor and aides will help children with special needs in voice lessons while they learn to hum and sing along with playing a ukulele.
This class is designed to teach the skills and understanding of the sport and equipment of archery to those with any disability. Adaptive equipment available to accomodate individuals with most disabilities.
These programs will expose those with special needs to the world of basketball where they can develop motor skills, establish physical activity, and learn the basic rules and fundamentals of basketball.
This boot-camp style class focuses on strength, conditioning, balance and movement.
These gymnastics classes for children with special needs include climbing, tumbling, trampoline, balance beam, and a focus on strength and conditioning in a safe and fun environment.
This sensory and motor program for children with disabilities focuses on climbing, tumbling, jumping and balance while increasing self-confidence, and body & spatial awareness.
These one-hour sessions include instruction and game play as those with all types of disabilities are taught listening and direction-following skills while learning to play Pickleball!
ADAPTIVE SPORTS COUNCIL
The Adaptive Sports Council is comprised of organizations and individuals interested in providing recreational opportunities to people with disabilities. This collaborative effort is designed to share resources and information so individuals with disabilities have greater access to these programs. Families and caregivers of people with disabilities can also learn about the resources available, and have easy access to information about recreational opportunities available throughout the Coachella Valley.

Adaptive/Therapeutic sports & Recreation
Sports and Recreation have value in everyone’s life. We get satisfaction from a good workout or game, getting the
heart pumping to stay fit and enjoying the camaraderie that comes from activity with others. That’s why the Desert Recreation District is committed to providing sports and recreation access to those with disabilities.
Through partnerships with organizations focused on providing classes, activities and events for people with various disabilities, the Adaptive/Therapeutic Sports and Recreation Program will make fitness accessible to everyone, regardless of physical or learning challenges.
The Desert Recreation District is currently recruiting for community professionals to participate in our Accessability Council. Made up of leaders with expertise in various areas of disabilities, rehabilitation, charitable giving and compliance, this group will provide guidance for the program.
Collaboration with organizations expert in various areas of disability allows the Desert Recreation District to provide sports and recreational activities, programs and events in a variety of sports for people with variety challenges.
